AVOID PREMATURE AGEING OF YOUR SKIN AT FACELAB

How many of us are guilty of saying “it’s not sunny today” or “I work indoors, I don’t need to wear a sunscreen?”

Ultraviolet (UV) rays are around us everywhere… So why is it so importance to protect our skin from harmful UV RAYS?

There are 3 types of UV Rays

  • UVA (Ageing) this type of UV is absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin
  • UVB (Burning) this damages the epidermal layer of the skin and makes our skin look Red or Tanned
  • UVC (radiation) this is absorbed by the ozone layer and doesn’t reach the earth surface

What type of sunscreen will provide me with enough protection?

Should I use a Chemical Block or Physical Block

When choosing your sun protection product, look for one with Broad Spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

Most chemical sunscreens will only protect us from UVB rays by reflecting the suns rays, however it may still allow UVA to be absorbed into the skin. It is the harmful UVA rays that causes the skin to prematurely age, not to mention the potential of these to cause dangerous skin cancers.

Physical sun blocks contain either Zinc, Titanium Dioxide or Oxybenzone. These chemicals not only reflect the sun’s rays but also stop the absorption of the UVA rays penetrating the skin. UVA is always around whether it is sunny or not and this types of UV ray penetrates glass….. That’s why sunspots appear on the hands in areas exposed to the sun while driving a motor vehicle. Essentially these rays cause skin damage when they hit the tops of the hands when holding the cars steering wheel.

As for Sun Protection Factor (SPF), there is a special formula for working out how much protection they provide. Higher SPF ratings only give slightly more protection when compared to products containing lower SPF ratings….. What really needs to be considered is how long it takes YOU, the individual to ‘burn’?

A topical skin product with an SPF factor will aid in prevention of sun related skin damage when used correctly and in conjunction with other skin protection actions.

Below, you can see how large increments in SPF only provide a slightly increased percentage in UV filtering capacity

SPF15 protects you from 93% of UVB rays

SPF30 protects you from 97% of UVB rays

SPF50 protects you from 98% of UVB rays

REMEMBER – How long it takes to burn varies from person to person.

MAKE SURE YOU STAY PROTECTED AND RE-APPLY YOUR SPF PRODUCT REGULARLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
